It started with a storm.

For centuries, the country of Rināran has been under sovereign rule. The monarchs would call upon the five clans situated around the huge territory, each taking a compass point, for their help. To the East lay the Azure Dragon Clan; the South the Vermillion Bird Clan; West the White Tiger; North the Black Tortoise; and lastly at the center stood the Yellow Dragon Clan. In time to come, the monarchy would dissolve and the clan heads would form a council and step up as rulers of Rināran (some say the clans had planned this).

However, the clans were only in relative harmony due to the respective guardian spirits. Living tensely in peace, the will of the guardian spirits the only thing keeping the clan from an all out war, it was only a matter of time before one became too greedy. The culprit? The then head-to-be of the Azure Dragon Clan.

The Great War — a war which lasted 1000 years. It tore the country apart and upset the balance of power. At the end of it, nearly all the clans had been torn apart. Rināran no longer held its former glory. The Yellow Dragon clan stepped up to the mantle of ruling Rināran, and the Azure Dragon clan, once almighty, was left in shambles.

It has been twenty years since. Rināran is still being rebuilt, but it is slowly prospering. Yet, the desire for power and revenge has not once abated. The disposed clans will return. They have not forgotten their grudge against the clan which orchestrated it all.

Qīnglóng — Seiryū — Cheonglong; (The Azure Dragon, representing Spring and Wood) to the East
Zhūquè — Suzaku — Zuzak; (The Vermillion Bird, representing Summer and Fire) to the South
Báihǔ — Byakko — Baekho; (The White Tiger, representing Autumn and Metal) to the West
Xuánwǔ — Genbu — Hyeonmu; (The Black Tortoise, representing Winter and Water) to the North
Huánglóng — Kōryū or Ōryū — Huanglong; (The Yellow Dragon, representing the Changing Seasons and Earth) to the Center

THE INDIVIDUAL ROLES
The Azure Dragon Clan:
SYMBOL
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

SPIRIT | COLOUR
Qing Long | Azure

COLOUR
Azure

The clan of the Azure Dragon was marked by power and prestige. Once acknowledged as the most formidable of all, it was not uncommon for Emperors of old to call upon the Azure Dragon clan to bless them, and request that the clan be their symbol. Some would even go as far to bear the title of Azure Dragon, but only those who were acknowledged by the Priestess was allowed to do so.

Such is their legacy.

But the Azure Dragon’s eldest daughter would be the catalyst to the Great Clan War that had torn apart the land for a millennium. As the Azure Dragon Clan was patriarchal, only the eldest son could become the head. Furthermore, the eldest daughter of the 50th generation was to be outcast by the clan for she held radical ideals that could bring the clan to ruin. She lusted after power, dissatisfied with how her clan was still only just that; a clan.

The Azure Dragon’s rightful place was to rule over Rināran, or so she thought. Her younger brother, also the eldest son, was still young enough to be manipulated and brainwashed by her. Not even the clan’s efforts to separate her from the main family was good enough. With her brother in the palm of her hand, she was the one who urged him to begin a war to expand the clan’s territory, and ultimately become the dominant ruler.

Such is their sin.

And now, 1020 years later, bruised, broken, and battered, the Azure Dragon has lost its former glory, and is effectively dissolved. Its lands have been ravaged and its territory split into three different sections, each taken over by the White Tiger, Black Tortoise, and Yellow Dragon clans. The main family is shamed and humiliated, but not utterly begone yet, for one child still remains.

The first branch family has all but vanished, but only from sight. There are still remnants of them about, but no one knows where they are, save for the few clan members that remain. No one knows where the second branch family has gone; people presume them to either have run away to a different country or was killed.

The eldest daughter and son of the 50th generation have long been slain; publicly executed in the heart of Rināran.

Such is their payment.
The Vermillion Bird Clan:
SYMBOL
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

SPIRIT | COLOUR
Zhu Que | Vermillion

Vibrant, beautiful, and radiant once marked the Vermillion Bird clan. Like how certain Emperors would call upon the Azure Dragon, certain Empresses too would beseech this clan to grant them their blessings. Likewise, the title of Vermillion Bird would only be granted to the most deserving of Empresses - those who ruled with benevolence and dignity. It was also known that the Vermillion Bird and Azure Dragons clan would be deeply intertwined with each other. The heads marrying each other was not uncommon.

Such is their legacy.

Loyalties once ran deep between the Vermillion Bird and Azure Dragon clans. Hence their alliance in the Great War. Each agreeing to take on the White Tiger and Black Tortoise clans each before converging on the Yellow Dragon clan, the Vermillion Bird head stuck faithfully to the plan.

But not everyone agreed. Discord brewed, and unhappiness grew rampant. Not all agreed with the head’s decision for it went against the very tenets of the clan. The clan was to bless, not devastate. The one to rally the disagreeable members of the clan would be the Priest. It was not the external that brought this clan down to its knees, but the internal. But it took a considerable amount of time to betray the clan head. By the time the clan had allied with the other three and betrayed the Azure Dragon, it was already four centuries into the war. It would also herald the clan falling apart from inside, the harmony it was once known for all but destroyed.

The damage had been done.

Such is their sin.

Now that the war has ended, the Vermillion Bird clan is in tatters. Its territory remains, but it has no part in the dividing of the Azure Dragon clan’s land as part of the punishment for helping it in the earlier part of the war. The clan's self-destruction has resulted in scattered members and a matriarch no one respects.

Such is their payment.
The Black Tortoise Clan:
SYMBOL
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

SPIRIT | COLOUR
Xuan Wu | Black

Visionary was the Black Tortoise Clan. They were called wise and known as unchanging in their ways that served them best. Though isolated from the rest of the clans, and the Head rarely appearing in public save for official events, this clan was often asked to do divinities. Their land was a land of worship and peace; a place one came to for enlightenment or for a holiday getaway.

Such is their legacy.

When the Head divined that the Azure Dragon clan would devastate Rināran, he chose to stay silence. For a Black Tortoise, unchanging in its ways, also believed that the clan would be able to curb the problem before it got out of hand. However he was gravely wrong, and the Great War began a few years after.

The clan had never believed in getting involved with the issues of other clans, and such was their decision. But once the clan of the Vermillion Bird invaded their territory, it was time to fight back. It was not that they were ill-prepared, but the gravity of the situation failed to sink in entirely into the Head’s mind, and it was because of his complacency that the clan was damaged more than it should have been.

They survived, allied with the White Tiger and Yellow Dragon, but their losses were far more than had they been prepared.

Such is their sin.

The Great War is a pyrrhic victory for the Black Tortoise. Their Head survived, but many clan members and civilians have been lost, especially in the initial months. Relationships with the White Tiger and Yellow Dragon clans are strained due to their attitude when the war started, and how the Head had failed to inform the others of the impending danger.

The lands of the clan are in the process of being rebuilt, but it is a far cry from the once thriving cities of knowledge and tranquility. Furthermore, the clan is no longer like it's old self; morale is low and the clansmen doubt the leadership of the current Head.

Such is their payment.
The White Tiger Clan:
SYMBOL
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

SPIRIT | COLOUR
Bai Hu | White

Defined by righteousness and heralded as the God of War, the White Tiger clan was the one the Emperors and Empresses would go to whenever they needed blessings for war. Also called the Protector, their symbol would be engraved onto the coffins of the Emperors and Empresses. It was not uncommon for the upper echelon to be closely entwined with the military.

Such is their legacy.

The clan has seen many different leaders, some more extreme. Some say the 50th's generation’s head was the worst. He was prideful and took his clan’s preachings to an extreme. Spurred on by righteousness, and a need to solve everything with violence, his warlike spirit was at first celebrated by his clan members. They would later come to realise their head was unstoppable in his bloody rampage, and would have to band together to stop him before he decimated the whole of the Azure Dragon clan.

First to jump into action the moment the azure clan started its attack, the White Tiger clan was leading the war. But the Head wanted nothing more than to eradicate the whole of the Azure Dragon clan, though some suspected it was also due to his guilt of allowing things to come to this stage acting out.

Due to him, there was more bloodshed and lost lives than necessary. When the clan finally pulled together to act as one to stop their Head, it was far too late to undo the damage done. The Yellow Dragon clan had to step in as well.

Such is their sin.

Now that the war has ended, the clan remains one of the few which has not completely fallen apart. But the scars of the war still run fresh and deep. Forced to confront their ideals as to what it really means to be a righteous guardian, and bearing the heavy sins of the mistakes of the previous generations, the clansmen have become something akin to nomads. Some still remain in their territory to rebuild what has been lost, but most are all over the country.

Such is their payment.
The Yellow Dragon Clan:
SYMBOL
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

SPIRIT | COLOUR
Huang Long | Gold

Ever changing yet grounded, and located in the very center and heart of Rināran, the Yellow Dragon clan was the most mysterious yet the most reliable. They removed themselves from palace affairs, but were willing to offer their services if hired. From scholars to the working class, the clan was said to be the most diverse. People in the clan need not be born into it, and those born into it could leave. Yet the main family was always shrouded in mystery, and few ever saw the Head’s face.

Such is their legacy.

When the Great War started, the Yellow Dragon clan would naturally ally with the White Tiger, and eventually Black Tortoise and Vermillion Bird, to take down the Azure Dragon. Though the White Tiger was at the forefront of the attack, the Yellow Dragon would be backing its plans and also trying to caution the Head. Some say the Four Clans Alliance would have lost the war - for the Azure Dragon was really that powerful - if not for the Yellow Dragon’s strong backing.

However, when the time came for the Yellow Dragon to step into the White Tiger’s clan affairs, they did so with the minutest hesitation. It was not well-taken for a clan to interfere with another clan’s affairs but there was no choice. Though the Yellow Dragon did aide those who wanted to stop the White Tiger’s Head from becoming an utter berserker, the ultimate killing blow was not delivered by them.

They would then take over as leaders of the war, and eventually lead the alliance to victory, however much loss there was for each clan.

Such is their sin.

The clan who has lost the least in the war, the Yellow Dragon clan is now the de facto ruler of Rināran. The main family has finally stepped out from the shadows and into the world for all to see. They assist with the efforts of rebuilding and whatever else the other clans need so long as it is reasonable.

But not all are happy with how things are now. Some claim devilry has been committed by the Yellow Dragon clan, but such accusations are quickly hushed by the other people. But there is a more disturbing rumour; a rumour that speaks of how this clan manipulated the Azure Dragon’s 50th generation’s eldest daughter into starting the war so they can rise to the top. The grudge the other clans hold against the Yellow Dragon clan is no secret. The Yellow Dragon clan holds the most power now, and for all they know, they have always held the most power.

Such is their payment.

CHARACTER POSITIONS
CHARACTER SKELETON
Azure Dragon:

Though the clan has been dissolved, with members of it still surviving, who's to say the clan may not return? Furthermore, they hold a centuries long grudge against the Yellow Dragon clan for usurping their role; those who care about that anyway. And for others, they may simply seek the revival of their clan.
GUARDIAN SPIRIT
People say the clan lost the war once their guardian spirit faded away two-thirds through the millennium. Grieving over the dissolution of their beloved clan, the guardian spirit now resides in a shrine built for it on desolate territory no clan has touched so far despite the Yellow Dragon clan claiming it. Who knows what they might do?
Qing Long, Azure Dragon of the East :: @reisye

MAIN FAMILY
Almost wiped out, the remaining descendant of the family bears the weight of the crimes their members have committed. It may be a lighter weight than others might believe, though... The descendant's current location is also unknown and some fear they may be up to something.
Descendant :: @ChiaRoseKuro

FIRST BRANCH FAMILY
They were the most loyal to the main family; confidants and protectors. Now, following the clan's dissolution, they have vanished. Though still around, the members of the family are scattered and only the main family's descendant know who and where they are. They are the only ones who still keep in frequent contact with the descendant.

SECOND BRANCH FAMILY
Once the emissaries and ambassadors of the Azure Dragon clan, the second branch family wielded a great reputation. They did harbour some jealousy towards the first branch family, however, for their closeness to the main family. This family has since disappeared after the war and is nowhere to be found. Perhaps some of them are still in Rināran...
Vermillion Bird:

Once proud and powerful, revered even by Empresses, the Vermillion Bird clan is now in tatters, clinging onto what little dignity they have left. To add insult to injury, the clan’s Spirit has refused to choose a Head from the main family-- or from the current pool of members, for that matter. Who knows what the future of such a powerless and ineffectual clan could be?
GUARDIAN SPIRIT
Though the guardian still remains, they has shut themself off from the clan and the world at large. The spirit has not blessed the current matriarch which is one of the reasons why she is seen as weak. Who knows what one has to do to summon the bird again?
Zhu Que, Vermillion Bird of the South :: @ChiaRoseKuro

MAIN FAMILY
Their graves rest under the weeping boughs of a willow tree that has been dyed vermillion from tears shed by broken swords and lost legacies.

FIRST BRANCH FAMILY
The family is respected as a branch family but, without the blessing of the Guardian Spirit, few respect them as the true leaders they wish to be seen as. The control this family has over the rest of the clan is weak and failing-- if it could be said to exist at all.
Matriarch / Head, also stand-in Head of the Clan (35+ y/old) ::
Matriarch’s sister, also stand-in Vice-Head ::

PRIEST'S FAMILY
Once synonymous with wise judgement and all-encompassing peace, the priest’s family have been toppled from their lofty pedestal, now only a shadow of its former glory. What little power they have left now is in uncertain hands, no thanks to their tender head, and to say they’re on the verge of eradication would be a mild understatement.
Priest’s Daughter, also Head (15+ y/o) :: @reisye
Priest’s Son ::

MEMBERS
Those who remain are loyal and devoted. Many have left or deserted after the war, leaving the member pool of this clan quite small. Though stringent requirements were once necessary for entry, all that is needed now is some assurance of good character… but, obviously, this test is not foolproof. Good character is, after all, an incredibly subjective matter to begin with.
Black Tortoise:

Those of the Black Tortoise clan have always been seen as passive folk, more prone to dispensing wisdom than indulging in headstrong acts, and this ideal has stuck-- though some are tempted to say that their tendency for wisdom has shifted to sheer indolence. With whispers of insurrections within its members abounding, it’s no wonder they’re on shaky grounds right now.
GUARDIAN SPIRIT
Despite the spirit's whimsical and forgiving nature, some say they is getting increasingly disappointed with the clan as a whole. Though they still continually blesses the Heads, there may come a day when they revokes it.
Xuan Wu, Black Tortoise of the North :: @Snowman

MAIN FAMILY
The mistakes of the previous generations burdening their shoulders, the main family is no longer as respected as it once was. The softness of the current Head does nothing to abate it as well. But the family still persists.
Head (40+) :: Wakahisa Ayumu :: @ChiaRoseKuro
Vice-Head :: Wakahisa Izanami :: @Snowman
Bodyguard [2] ::
Descendant :: Wakahisa Arata :: @cerisiers

FIRST BRANCH FAMILY
Discontent has brewed within the first branch family-- discontent centred upon the Head’s outdated ways and the main family’s steady hold upon an increasingly crippled clan. If possible, they’d like to… shuffle things around a little, just so they get a shot at furthering their own place in the world.
Head ::
Vice-Head ::
Members ::

SECOND BRANCH FAMILY
The second branch family have always been steadfast supporters of the main family, and nothing much has changed for them, too, since the conclusion of the war. They have no hand in the conspiracy brewing within the first branch family.
Head ::
Vice-Head ::
Members ::

MEMBERS
Although intelligence and knowledge are valued, as is good judgement and a peaceful disposition, not much is in the way of a selection criteria for the Black Tortoise members apart from the usual requirements of some form of devotion to the clan. It’s probably why some infiltrators have been able to sneak into their midst with relatively no issues…
White Tiger:

With nothing but their broken pride and flawed morals to their name, the White Tiger clan had receded into the shadows upon the war’s end, with only fragments of their once-great name scattered across a leaderless people. Those that claim to have risen from the ashes of this once-destitute faction have only seemed to retain the bloodthirst which led to its downfall… but is there more to their revival than meets the eye?
GUARDIAN SPIRIT
The spirit does not stay in one place for long, even with the person they has chosen to lead the clan. They often visits the other members.
Bai Hu, White Tiger of the West ::

MAIN GROUP
Roaming around Rināran, the decidedly multicultural gathering has raised a few eyebrows-- to say the least of other, more worrisome, aspects. Few know what they are up to but one thing is clear, the leader of the group is the sole member everyone in (what remains of) the clan looks up to. And it appears the guardian spirit has chosen them.
Head (30+ y/o) :: @impudent_mugwump
Vice-Head ::
Bodyguard [1] ::
Members [3] :: Naphtali Bayle :: @ChiaRoseKuro

HOME GROUP
These are the members who have chosen to remain in their territory and rebuild it. Rebuilding is going slowly but steadily. The people under this category are easily the most close-knit of the clan.
Leader (35+ y/o) ::
Vice-Head ::
Members ::

SPLINTER GROUPS
The rest of the clansmen belong under this category, either travelling alone or with someone else. It is hard to contact them but they generally still keep in contact with home base. Furthermore, outside of the clan, no one else knows they belong to the White Tiger clan and they are more numerous than one would think.
Leader (35+ y/o) ::
Vice-Head ::
Members ::
Yellow Dragon:

Their rise to prominence has been terribly bloody, borne upon the backs of the Azure Dragon’s demise, and though some might protest at the unjustness and suspicion of it all, their voices are only small and hardly heard. What glory they achieved for themselves in the war have manifested in their ascension to the central position, both figuratively and literally, but the years have seem to erode any pretense at benevolence and goodwill...
(Normal members can be any race)
GUARDIAN SPIRIT
Huang Long, Yellow Dragon of the Center ::

MAIN FAMILY
Drunk on the headiness of power and the allure of false promises, the main family have pursued the path of money and, as such, have been brought low by their meaningless pursuits of riches and ignoble glory. As far as anyone’s concerned, not a single shred of true dignity can be found in these corrupt souls.
Head, also Head of the Clan (40+ y/o, or less if succession changed) :: Kazehaya Haruna :: @cerisiers
Vice-Head :: Kazehaya Seiichi :: @Snowman
Bodyguards [2] :: Fai :: @Snowman | Jason Cho :: @ChiaRoseKuro
Descendants :: Kazehaya Risae, Kazehaya Chiyuki, Ariakos Shimizu, Wenqing Fai, Genevieve Cho

FIRST BRANCH FAMILY
It probably doesn’t come as any surprise to anyone that the first branch family are partying just as hard as the main family, if not more so. Without the public scrutiny which the main family must contend with, they’ve been given the freedom to enjoy their riches as they see fit.
Head ::
Vice-Head ::
Members ::

SECOND BRANCH FAMILY
Although the rest of their clan are intent on enjoying their newfound (or not so newfound, depending on one’s perception of time) power and authority, the second branch family seem to have a small glimmering of righteousness within them. Perhaps not all is lost with them, those who are a little closer to those suffering under their clan members’ oppression…
Head ::
Vice-Head ::
Members ::

MEMBERS
Manpower is absolutely vital when it comes to asserting one’s dominance, and the Yellow Dragons have gone all-out when it comes to recruiting people to bulk them up. All that’s required, really, is an effective swagger and the brawn to back up the Head’s fine brains.

[ Unlimited, though it’ll be capped if there’s too many ]
Commonfolk:

The commonfolk, townspeople, or whatever else you’d like to call them-- these are the people who, essentially, do not belong in a clan. Maybe some even come from other continents for one reason or another, though not all might be common knowledge. Ranging from merchants to mercenaries, the roles they have are plentiful, and they constitute the majority which drive the economy of the continent.
Fortune Teller :: Yue :: @Snowman
Traveller :: @Snowman
Merchant :: Ginger Cho :: @ChiaRoseKuro
Durian Farmer :: Teruna Lim :: @ChiaRoseKuro
Ambra:

Also known as the Shadow Operators, they have existed for decades -- centuries even. Their presence ever in the shadows, people have heard of them and know they are no myth... but access to this shadow organisation has always been a mystery. No one even knows how they choose their members, but their power is such that they’ve been said to have even worked with the Emperors of old. Full of information, trades, and secrets, it may come to no surprise that they also rule the underground and black market. They deal with many things and people.

Including the remaining descendant of the Azure Dragon’s main family.

Where Ambra appears, blood is sure to follow.

[tabs][tab=Subplots]It appears that there is someone out to kill the last remaining member of the Azure Dragon main family. Is the assassin from the Azure Dragon second branch family or the Yellow Dragon clan?

Rumours of a re-emergence for the White Tiger clan are being whispered about in the remaining regions; rumours that concern an individual said to be terribly bloodthirsty and vengeful, even more so than past Heads. They say that this new Head has found righteousness, morality grounded in the maintenance of life and the passing into death... but is their righteousness really right? And even if it is... why aren't any of the other clan fragments speaking up against this abrupt claim to leadership?
Credits to @ChiaRoseKuro

There have been mentions that people are conspiring to murder the Black Tortoise Head. It does not help that certain members of the Yellow Dragon have been getting fairly involved with the Tortoise’s matters. Oh? And what’s this about forbidden magic being mentioned?

Speaking of the Black Tortoise Head’s inadequacy, though, it seems like there’s two different agendas emerging in regards to the deposition of the incumbent Head. But when one group wants him dead and the other wants everyone else along with him dead… what’s to be done? And more importantly, who will prevail in this seemingly internal battle?
Wording credited to @Shironix

The Vermillion Bird clan lacks the blessing of its own Guardian Spirit. The current matriarch holds little power. But what’s this? It appears the Spirit has elected someone else as the next Head of the clan, and it is not the Priest’s daughter. It is not even someone from inside the clan.

The sole survivor of the Azure Dragon's main family has descended to shadowy deals through their connections with... ambiguous individuals.
Wording credited to @ChiaRoseKuro

Vermillion Bird has lacked its second branch family ever since the war ended and, though nobody has really heard of them since, their presence is still lingering within Rināran’s depths. Rumours have begun to make their way to everyone’s ears; rumours that speak of an uprising to depose the current family and the priesthood. Whether these rumours are groundless or not remains to be seen, though…

OOC OPENS — 1/1/17
PROFILE OPENS — 1/1/17
IC OPENS — ???

1/1/17The Miscellaneous section has very important notes you must read; some are related to how the roleplay will be run. Anyone who has held a previous Head or Vice-Head position must get back to me on whether you want it or not within 48 hours, or I will deem it open to everyone else.[/tab][tab=Miscellaneous]CLAN DISTINGUISHERS
To ensure that each clan can clearly identify their own and their hierarchy within their ranks, every member is required to own a hairpin or tassel, depending on their gender and status, and display it upon their person at all times. The rules regarding these are so stringent that anyone found with an inappropriately elaborate hairpin or tassel will face severe punishments (including, but not limited to, public humiliation, demotions and executions) and regulations regarding length, condition and sheen are not to be taken lightly.

Clans are differentiated from one another by their colours; ranks, by the elaborateness of their distinguisher’s designs. Apart from the coloured bead which symbolises their clan, members are more than welcome to fashion their own tassels or hairpins-- so long as they’re socially appropriate.

However, considering the state of some clans, it can be said that the regulations are no longer enforced so strictly though some still keep to the rules out of pride or loyalty.

POWERS
A) Spirits get one power; however, make sure it’s vague as it’s supposed to be diverse and versatile. Heads get two powers if they are bonded with the spirits-- one from their Spirit’s blessing, and the other from the manifestation of the Spirit’s power. Vice-heads get one power. Direct descendants may get one power if the Spirit decides to bless the family as well and the same applies to Bodyguards but, as this is up to the discretion of the Spirit in question, plot with their maker if you desire a power. If no one has taken a Spirit position, assume that the descendants and bodyguards do not have a power. All of these with the exception of the Head is limited to the main family only.

Powers must be related to the respective clan’s element and may not be overpowered; furthermore, powers cannot be dispensed without some sort of penalty to dissuade its frequent usage. Refer to the individual clans for its element and the moderator/co-moderator for penalty ideas, should you have any queries regarding this.

B) As you can see above, power granted by the Spirits are through blessings. In the same vein, one can also gain power through curses. Which is also what people call "forbidden magic". The granters of this are called "The Four Heavenly Kings": Bishamon-ten of the North, Zouchou-ten of the South, Jikoku-ten of the East, and Koumoku-ten of the West. Respectively, their followers are: yaksas, kumbhāṇḍas, gandharvas, and nāgas. Though once benevolent, the Kings were corrupted more than a millennium ago.

Powers gained by blessings already strain the body to begin with, and it is even worse when gained by curses. One has to sacrifice something before they can use the cursed power. It may not seem much at first, but the cost adds up and will eventually kill you. What the price is each time you use the cursed power depends based on the severity of the power.

People who use forbidden magic are almost always killed once found out as they are deemed those who will bring destruction. And desiring too much power as a common person is looked down upon. Even the cursed magic has its limitations however— according to what the Kings rule over.

Of the North: Rain (thus, water magic is what is granted)
Of the South: Wind (thus, air magic is what is granted)
Of the East: Music (thus, the ability to manipulate music is what is granted)
Of the West: One who sees all (thus, clairvoyance is what is granted)

Additionally, one may only gain the ability of one cursed power, otherwise the strain even when receiving the power will kill. Even without using the cursed power, the strain of having receiving it the tainted way will whittle away at your life.

SPIRITS
Spirits were once impartial to the clans as a whole despite being guardians, but that has changed as time passed. However, even now, Spirits may not extend their power to the point the balance of power tips in their clan's favour. Spirits also do not hold a true body but can possess one. Their physical body is not exclusive to humans. However, due to the possible conflict between souls, most Spirits prefer their chosen body be freshly dead.

THE SANDBOX
Here, I will explain how the roleplay will be ran. As stated before, this is a sandbox RP meaning I will leave the plot, subplots, and even characters to be as free as possible. What does this mean?

You kick each other out of the sandbox like kids so you can run the plot.

Just kidding.

It is very simple: I will not be forcing the plot a certain way. What I have done so far is merely the setup of the current setting. The actions of your characters, the plot important arcs (which you can construct without consulting me or Shiro unless you want/need help) and decisions, the deaths, etc. will all decide how the plot goes. Maybe, the Yellow Dragon clan never gets dethroned and stomps over all the clans. Or the clans all band together to rule as overlords over Rināran, somehow. Whatever it is, and it can be anything, lies in your hands. That's just for the general overarching plot.

What about subplots? You, if your character is part of it, can decide how to run it. You can also create your own subplots (and no, you do not have to tell me). Speaking about subplots though, I do need someone to volunteer their character as the Vermillion Bird's chosen one, or perhaps the Guardian Spirit wants to choose it themself, which I am fine with.

And now, characters. You may notice that certain families in the Character section do not come with spots. This does not mean there are no spots. Take for example Azure Dragon's First Branch Family: they're scattered all over the country and do not keep in contact with anyone but the heir. And there are no spots. But you can make a character under that family and not tell me (but do tell the heir because they have a relation there). So what does this mean? You may make a character for any existing family (Vermillion Bird's second branch family is wiped out though) even if there are no positions listed, and not inform me. The stipulation is that if there is a relation to someone else in the descriptor, you must inform that person, and the position you would want to take in this case is under the Commonfolk category.

Even more information about characters! The kind of secret characters you may make are not just limited to the families. You could make an illegitimate child of some Head to add even more conflict, and more, be creative. This also means you can make, say, a messenger of a certain Spirit who has gone into hiding. Once again, if your character has a specific relation(ship) to someone, you have to inform the character's maker.

You can also make secret characters who are godly beings, but they must come from oriental folklore/mythology. And they need a strong reason for appearing in the RP.

Arcs. Earlier, I said something about constructing plot important/relevant arcs. Yes, you may do that and once again, do it without consulting me. The flow of the roleplay will be shaped by your characters. You may also construct character (development) relevant arcs and keep it private (aka to only a few characters) if you so desire. I do highly suggest discussing arcs with people if their character happens to be an important piece in it to prevent any unhappiness, however. Unless they have said beforehand their characters are free game.

Wow all this sounds so complicated! Don't worry, just take your time to warm up to it. Just think of it as all of us are game masters of TSFH and we can fuck up the entire country if our characters' actions lead to it. And that's a-okay even if you may not want that. Do note that consequences will come with actions though.

And last but not least, the in-character thread. Or threads. I will be making two IC threads first and will increase it to one more if there is a need to. This is to ensure the roleplay flows better and easier instead of keeping everyone locked down into a thread. For example, Thread 1 has a festival going on but your character wouldn't attend it and you want to RP them. So you can use Thread 2 instead to RP your character.

Furthermore, your character does not have to stay permanently in one thread. To make things easier for everyone, please use the usual Location and With tags in your IC post. The locations are not fixed in a thread (so in Thread 1, Character A can be in White Tiger's territory, and Character B and C can be at the Marketplace). Unless there is a specific event going on within that thread (like a festival or a kidnapping and you're trying to find the kidnapped), then the location will be fixed.

Don't hesitate to spring a surprise event or arc on people, by the way. Oh, and please don't add a power section to your character if they utilise curse magic.

Bottom line is, I am not here to police the RP (too much). And the only reason I'm giving you guys this much free reign is because I trust you guys.

Announcement
The miscellaneous tab has been updated! But to make everyone's life easier, I'll just state the change here: You can make godly beings as secret characters, but they must be from oriental folklore/mythology, and their reason for appearing in the IC has to make sense. So no willy-nilly "I want a god for utterly no reason!"
