it's finally The Big Day for two loving (?) men

Years of aggression and sexual tension (which manifested into more aggression, but that's beside the point) have led to the most monumental day of their lives, barring the day they decided to lock eyes with one another, pause momentarily in their fighting to acknowledge their attraction to one another and... yeah, okay, so maybe it's just one of the many stages in their life. But as family members, friends and colleagues filter in to see Saskia Sunder Kelsey and Liron Sofianos finally tie the knot with each other, things aren't really going smoothly for the pair.

Which, obviously, isn't a surprise, but... well, let's see how things go with them.

Saskia Sunder Kelsey
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Saskia had read, somewhere, that it was bad luck to see the bride before the wedding. Had someone asked him where he'd read that or how anyone had verified the proof that linked seeing one's spouse to lacking fortune, he wouldn't have been able to tell them- but it was certainly a convenient excuse, if nothing else. Of course, it wasn't convenient for him when he just wanted to leave the entrance and see whether Liron had ended up being forced into a dress or not, but those were semantics. His father's hand, viced over his wrist, was of more concern to him.

"Your grandfather will treat you like a five-year-old if you leave now," Shimei murmured, somehow manging to sound amused despite his desert-dry tone. "He almost put me over his knee at my wedding, when I'd tried to find your mother."

"Marmaduke can stuff it," Sasuke replied quietly, just as dry but just as amused. Even so, he found his eyes drifting to the shaggy-haired figure standing ramrod-straight, alternately reprimanding his oldest cousin and taking small, measured sips from the slender flute of wine in his hand. With a faint 'tsk', he tugged ineffectually at his father's hand and used his free one to fix his tie, struggling but failing to keep a light scowl from his face.

As irritable and objective as his father was, his words- like always- had a point to them.

Turning back to the entrance with a grimace, one that he quickly smoothed over when he made accidental eye contact with his youngest cousin, he bowed to the elderly couple shuffling to their seats and surreptitiously looked around for his best friend. Hopefully, she was managing a little better than he was. Or maybe she was teasing Liron in his stead, who knew.

Abraxas Sofianos-Kelsey
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Had Abraxas been left to his own devices, he would've been perfectly happy staying at home. There were games to play, the neighbor's kids to chat with; anything and everything would've been better than standing here. Yet here he was, feeling like his lungs would squeeze out of his chest, all because he'd been lured by food. Food, of all things. Not even the best ice-cream cake or the juiciest rump steak would make up for this... this...

"Careful, squirt," his dad's cousin said, tugging Abraxas' hand away from the thing choking his throat. "Your dad wouldn't be pleased if you loosened that bow tie of yours."

"But I don't like it!" Abraxas whined back (though if Sænan noticed his whining or the wobbly pout forming on his lips, he kept it to himself). "It's annoying, there's nothing to eat, I don't even know why I'm here in the first place-"

"And you sound like a brat." Abraxas' gaze narrowed instantly as it snapped to the other's face, but Sænan ignored him in favour of smirking at his dad. Deciding that he had enough of being manhandled by his dad's cousin (and who was he to tell him what to do, anyway? He was just like Cleo, a dumb stick in the mud! Hmph!!), he took the opportunity to slip out of his grasp and run in the opposite direction, weaving around a few idle chatters for good measure. Soon, he was on the other side of the satin chairs, crouching beneath an extra-tall one and breathing as well as he could with something pressing against his throat.

Nothing had been solved, though, and Abraxas just couldn't get his fingers to rip off the tie. Even if it made him look good (and he knew because his cheeks had almost been pinched off, what with the random old grannies cooing over him and feeding him snacks), he needed it off, now. So even if it went against what he'd normally do, in a situation like this, he slipped back into the crowd and found his younger brother.

Without so much as a greeting, Abraxas puffed his chest in front of Anthony, jabbed a finger at the bow tie across his throat and imperiously uttered,
"Take it off, it's stuffy."

LIRON SOFIANOS .
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Never in a million years did Liron imagine himself getting married to the one person who managed to get on his nerves more than anyone else.

Really, if you'd told him two weeks ago that he would be getting married to Saskia, Liron would've laughed at you and suggest that you check yourself for a concussion. He also might have punched you; accidentally, of course, and purely out of reflex, because the mere mention of the Kelsey's name was enough to get him angry.

Well, but here he was, in some large fancy building that he forgot the name of, in a suit that felt two sizes too tight. He had been stuck in a perpetual state of fearing that the next step he took would rip the seams apart — all of them, at once — before Lennox had told him flatly to not be stupid.

Which Liron appreciated, mostly, but it was sort of hard to not be stupid when you were getting married soon. Part of him wanted to see Saskia, just because he knew his soon-to-be husband (oh god was that a terrifying thought) would succeed most majestically in triggering his temper and hopefully the anger would chase his nervousness away; but there was some sort of myth where the two people getting married couldn't see each other before the actual wedding, lest they risk a terrible marriage or whatever.

Liron was like 90% sure that this marriage was going to go up in flames either way, but whatever. He wasn't sure if Saskia's family was the superstitious type, but he didn't want to risk pissing any of them off, especially since he'd never really had stable parental figures in the past (having been bounced from foster home to foster home when he was a child).

He turned to his best friend.

"Maybe I should have actually gone with the dress," he groaned to Lennox. "At least I could breathe in it."

ANTHONY SOFIANOS-KELSEY .
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Anthony really, really didn't like people.

Well, that wasn't quite true. He supposed he liked them well enough, as long as they left him alone. It wasn't that he hated their existence or was disdainful of their presence or anything like that (unlike one of his fathers and Aunt Milrai), it was more that he hated it when they attempted to interact with him.

Strangers, usually. Or, in this case, relatives who he didn't really know but felt like their familial bond to him was more than enough reason to suffocate him with hugs, like they were doing to all his siblings as well. Maybe if they weren't so overwhelming, he could attempt to smile a too-big smile and tolerate it, but they were.

Not to mention, his dad's side of the family, the Kelsey side (or the only side), was an extremely intimidating group of adults and all of them looked perfectly capable of committing murder and getting away with it, too.

Soon enough he burst into tears and all the adults lavishing him with unwanted attention immediately left him alone, so there was that.

The moment no one was looking at him, he dove under the table until he guessed his face looked more or less presentable before reluctantly crawling out. Squinting as his eyes adjusted, he debated going back under the table, where it was nice and quiet and where nobody could bother him, but before he could make up his mind his older brother found him.

"Take it off, it's stuffy."

Anthony blinked owlishly. "You look nice in it, though," he said, but even as he protested he was already undoing the knot with nimble fingers. One did not simply refuse the great Abraxas Sofianos-Kelsey. "Dad's going to be mad," he warned as an afterthought, but by then he had already taken the bow off and it wasn't as if he knew how to put it back on.

He held it awkwardly for a moment, unsure what to do, before holding it out and offering it to Abraxas. "Um," he began, eloquently. "How do you like it so far? The wedding, I mean."

MILRAI JIEL BRZOZA .
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Whoever made it proper for women to wear dresses at weddings (even if it wasn't their own wedding) could screw themselves.

Milrai was going to wear a suit to her best friend's wedding. She looked damn good in a suit, for one, and honestly she just preferred the feeling of pants over a skirt; the latter made her feel oddly vulnerable, without the reassuring cling of fabric to her legs.

But some way or another, someone insisted that it wasn't right and she let herself be persuaded to wear a dress to the wedding (which required a trip to the mall because she just happened to own no dresses whatsoever), and then she had to do an etiquette check to make sure that black was an acceptable color to wear to a wedding (which apparently it was).

As much as she denied emotional attachment, she cared a lot for Saskia, and she wanted this wedding to go more or less without a hitch (though the chances of that were slim, considering the two people getting married).

Most of all, she wanted him to be happy.

She'd spent enough time playing nice with the rest of the guests and keeping a careful eye on the kids (no one was dead yet), now it was time to find the lucky groom. She picked her way through the crowd, long used to the lingering and scandalized glances that middle-aged women threw her way — if she had to wear a dress, she was going to wear a dress she liked, and if the slit up the side of the dress' skirt bothered them, then they could go back to the seventeenth century.

She made her way to Saskia; he was looking in the other direction, so she nodded respectfully to his father before tapping him on the shoulder.

"Chin up, lover boy," she suggested dryly. "You're going to make people think you don't want to get married to your temperamental boy toy in the other room." She wrinkled her nose slightly. "He and his best friend both look awful, by the way, but it's not catastrophic as long as you don't care at all about your reputation."

This was totally a lie. Liron cleaned up surprisingly well, and Lennox — she did not want to dwell on how a man who seemed to be half plant could look that . . . decent.

Saskia Sunder Kelsey
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Saskia felt his father's grip loosen before he felt the tap on his shoulder, but it didn't make him any more or less surprised to see his best friend when he turned around. There were few people Shimei trusted him with and less still that would greet him so casually; the only others were his cousins, and they were more inclined to swap a few words with their uncle before approaching him. Either way, though, he found his polite smile morphing back into its usual edged smirk when his father left- presumably to scold Sænan for letting his oldest son worm away. Even if he didn't care for coddling and controlling them like he and his father had been, when they were young, his grandfather was a force to be reckoned with when he was in charge.

And here I'd been, thinking it was my wedding, Saskia thought sardonically. Even if he grew old (which was an unsavoury thought, until he thought of Liron's face lined with wrinkles), some things would never change. Marmaduke being the domineering head of the Kelseys seemed to be one of those, unfortunately, but at least Milrai's humour looked to be another of those.

"Temperamental boy-toy?" Saskia couldn't help the way his brow arched or his smirk grew at his best friend's words, but he decided he didn't care much if his grandfather came over to chew him out for it later. "I'd hate to see what Liron thinks of that pet name; he might even threaten me with marriage."

Some of the guests in attendance cast him odd looks- eavesdropping, as it would seem, ran rife when there was nothing else of interest to do- but Saskia couldn't have cared less. As much as people wondered about the indelible stain he'd created on the family name by virtue of marrying a man, and a nameless one at that, he'd long passed the point of worrying. If Shimei, the epitome of self-control and coldness, could shrug off his son's transgressions, then he could too. Even if that meant he'd served up a large helping of sarcasm on the side.

So when Milrai brought up his reputation...
"I'm sure they both look awful, if your blush is anything to go by." As dry as his tone was, Saskia couldn't quite repress the glint in his eye. Still, he took the effort to run a cursory eye over his best friend's choice of clothing before he tacked on a casual, "I still think you look better in a suit. Or, at least, you'd put your temperamental boy-toy to shame with it."

With that, Saskia's smirk slipped into something more genuine as he stared levelly into her eyes, before he turned to the entrance and greeted one of his colleagues, smoothing his looks back into its polite mask as he did so.

Lennox Shea
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Whoever decided that suits were the only acceptable attire for a wedding was fucking dumb, as far as Lennox was concerned. Granted, most people didn't have physical mutations which prevented them from wearing just about every type of shirt known to mankind, but his best friend didn't even have leaves growing out of his torso and he was complaining about how uncomfortable it was. It was only proper for him to tell Liron that he was a pussy and that, contrary to popular belief, he wasn't enough of a beefcake to burst the entire ensemble before the wedding, but he stuck to calling him stupid instead. Milrai was the one with the expansive vocabulary and caustic tongue, not him; he'd likely trip over his words if he tried to voice it all.

Still, that didn't stop Lennox from snorting at Liron's misery; he may have been his best friend, but it didn't mean he couldn't be his usual asshole self when the occasion called for it. Tugging at his tie with a hiss and eyeing both his and the groom-to-be's outfit with a truly unimpressed glare, he grumbled an angry,
"Fuck clothing in general," and snorted again for good measure. "But you know, if you wore a dress, that would burst quicker. You'd also look hideous in it."

Which, granted, wasn't exactly the nicest thing to say to your best friend when they clearly needed a pep talk, but Lennox had never been much of a comforter. The fact that he could imagine Liron in a dress- and to a certain extent, what the guy's family would think when they saw him dressed like that- probably didn't help either.

With a rueful shake of his head, Lennox clapped Liron on the back and uttered a dry,
"I'm sure your boyfriend won't mind. Who knows, you might even get a nosebleed out of him."

Abraxas Sofianos-Kelsey
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It struck Abraxas that his younger brother didn't look too good when Anthony began fiddling at his bow tie with fingers that were far defter than his own- a fact that annoyed him to no end, if only because he was supposed to be better than everyone else- but, not particularly enjoying the tickle of silk and bare skin against his throat, he kept his comments to himself until it was gone. Then again, though, Anthony never really did 'looking good' very well; if he wasn't hiding behind someone, he was hiding behind something, or he was just plain hiding in general. He couldn't particularly imagine what it was like to hide all the time or cry yourself raw until you could, but it wasn't like he'd ever do it anytime soon. Apart from the gross pinches delivered to his cheek, he'd been enjoying the attention a fair bit.

Getting a scolding or one of great-grandpa's smacks wasn't the sort of attention Abraxas wanted, though. Still, it didn't stop him from carelessly shrugging off Anthony's concern.

"I know I look good in it, but it didn't feel nice." Abraxas muttered mutinously, rubbing at the newly-freed expanse of skin on his neck with absolutely no regret. "And dad's too busy with his wedding to care. If he's bothered about it, then tough."

Puffing his cheeks to express more of his indignation, Abraxas glared at the limp strip of cloth in Anthony's hand, before he grabbed it out of his younger brother's hand and stuffed it deep into his pocket. Someone would have to find a new one or wrestle his old one out, because he wasn't going to wear one again, ever. Even if there was someone to impress, he'd do it without something pressing on his throat- but before he could pursue that train of thought any further, his eyes snapped back to his brother's as Anthony began speaking again.

"Better than you, I'd say," Abraxas commented in an offhand manner, noting the faint red ringing his younger brother's eyes but not bothering to point it out. "Dad said the food was going to be good but it's all just finger stuff; I could've just stayed at home if I wanted cheese and crackers, you know? And one of dad's cousins was watching me because great-grandpa said I was trouble. I bet he probably popped out of a rock all old and wrinkly; that's why he's being so... ugh, mean.

"But hey, where's Cleo?"
Glancing around for his sister, Abraxas grimaced involuntarily at how she'd react if she ended up seeing him anytime soon. "You should show me your hidey-holes, then nobody would get mad at me."

Abraxas cast a sly look at Anthony before he laced his hand through his younger brother's, tugging insistently on it despite giving him no time to answer. The sooner he got away from stuffy old great-grandpa and his stuffy little sister, the better.

Cleo Sofianos-Kelsey
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Cleo had never been to a wedding before, much less one comprised of her very first adoptive parents' relatives and friends, so she was understandably not quite herself when one of her dad's cousins took her by the hand and introduced her to everyone. The physical contact was alright; Lonán didn't grip her hand too tightly and he didn't have sweaty palms, so she felt no need to wriggle out of his hold. What wasn't alright was all the attention she was getting, the endless questions that she could barely answer and the coos that threatened to drown her whole, so by the time she had gotten to her great-grandpa... well, she wasn't in much of a mood to look nice and presentable. It didn't stop her from diligently bearing his sharp gaze and sharper questions, though it did stop her from acting more comfortable.

By the time Cleo was done with Marmaduke, she was ready to collapse into a chair and pretend she wasn't there for a while... but the thought of ruining her pretty flower-girl dress or messing up her hair stopped her just in time. She'd barely steered herself away from the comfy-looking rows of satin when she spotted something- or rather, someone- zipping purposefully through the chairs, and it didn't take her long to give chase. Abraxas was a menace on a good day and downright terrible on a bad one, and she could already guess which day was which if her own experiences were anything to go by.

So when she lost him in the crowd, Cleo could hardly suppress her disappointment. That didn't stop her from finding her wayward brother through other, less direct, means though.

Drifting over to the entrance, where she could see one of her dads greeting someone, Cleo gently tugged at Aunt Milrai's dress and waited for her to turn around. Even if her chances were slim, she needed to know if her dad's best friend had seen her wayward brother- and, more importantly, if he'd been up to no good. It was her responsibility to make sure everything went smoothly for her dads, and if Abraxas did anything to ruin it...

ANTHONY SOFIANOS-KELSEY .
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It would not be too far off the mark to say that Anthony idolized his older brother, because honestly he did. Abraxas carried himself extremely assuredly for someone so young, seeming to know exactly what he wanted and how to get it. If Anthony could have even a fraction of his brother's confidence, then he'd be content.

He made a noncommittal noise in answer to Abraxas' remark that, appearances aside, the bowtie didn't feel nice at all. Anthony himself hadn't really minded his matching one; it was far less suffocating than the adults and their attention, for one.

"Well, hopefully Dad won't care then," Anthony amended. He glanced over his brother's outfit, from the pristine white shirt with its stiff collar to the symmetrical vest to the pressed pants and his shiny shoes. "I mean, you look nice without the bowtie, too."

Anthony listened patiently to Abraxas' tirade about the lack of decent food as well as their dad's relatives; he was about to defend great-grandpa's honor with something to the effect of 'he's not that mean, I'm sure he's quite nice once you get to know him', but the subject was changed before he could.

"But hey, where's Cleo?"

He craned his head in an attempt to look for his sister, but unfortunately his height worked against him; most of his vision was obscured by the figures of far-taller adults.

"You should show me your hidey-holes, then nobody would get mad at me."

Anthony blinked at Abraxas again, not for the first and most certainly not for the last time, before shifting his confused gaze down to their intertwined hands. "I, uh — I only have one? Hidey-hole, that is. Right now. And it's not even that much of a hidey-hole, it's kind of just — under the table," he babbled nervously, as he tended to do when people expected things of him and he wasn't quite sure he could deliver.

"But you might not want to go under the table, because then you'll mess up your clothes and look all gross like me."

MILRAI JIEL BRZOZA .
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

"I'd hate to see what Liron thinks of that pet name; he might even threaten me with marriage."

Milrai barely bit back a snort, only just managing to, thanks to her years of maintaining flat, unimpressed expressions even when she found something funny. (More often than not, it was the pitiful kind of funny, the 'I can't believe someone as idiotic as you exists' kind of funny, but Saskia was a welcome break away from that.) Instead, she settled for letting amusement glint in her eyes.

"Dear me, the thought of the both of you married? I can't even imagine." She let her defenses down enough for a half-smirk/half-smile hybrid to tug at her lips. "Please mention the term 'temperamental boy toy' to his face, though. I'd love to see his reaction."

"I'm sure they both look awful, if your blush is anything to go by."

Milrai immediately scowled, bringing up a hand to touch her cheeks as if it'd make a difference. Damn her complexion. "It's the makeup," she claimed flatly. "I don't blush, and most certainly not at the thought of two barbarians attempting to play the parts of gentlemen."

When Saskia examined her outfit and told her casually that he still thought she'd look better in a suit (and apparently would put Lennox to shame in one), she let herself smile. Faint and small, but genuine and there nonetheless.

"As much as I'd love to don a suit, it's my duty to balance you out. I can't put on a suit until you put on a dress." She subtly ignored the slight jibe about her temperamental boy toy, because any association between her and Lennox was ridiculous. He was entertainment, nothing more and nothing less.

"For what it's worth, you look nice. I'd marry you myself if I didn't consider you my brother — and if your soon-to-be husband wasn't in the picture of course." And mine, her traitorous mind added silently, before she immediately shoved away any thoughts of marriage. She still didn't even admit that they were dating, for God's sake; her subconscious was getting ahead of itself.

One of Saskia's annoyingly pretentious colleagues came to distract him, and she was about to take a step back and let Saskia handle the interaction when she felt a gentle tug at the hem of her dress. She turned, stern features softening immediately when her eyes fell on Cleo's small and adorably dolled-up form.

The girl was looking oddly empty-handed; Milrai was well-aware that, at the moment, she was the sole source of sanity in her chaotic household, and she was expecting to see her keeping a firm hold on her older brother.

"Hello Cleo — you're looking lovely," she greeted, before deciding to take a guess. "Are you looking for Abraxas?"

LIRON SOFIANOS .
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Liron loved his best friend a lot, a fact that he would never voice aloud because it was only less embarrassing than him telling Saskia he loved him a lot (and his stance on this was really rather ridiculous, considering that Lennox was his best man and Saskia was going to be his husband in a short amount of time), but the fact remained: he loved Lennox a lot.

Still, his self-esteem could only take so many hits, and in between his best friend and . . . boyfriend? fiancé? husband-to-be? — well, whatever Saskia was to him, between him and Lennox, Liron tended to feel sorely underappreciated.

(It wasn't as if he didn't return the favor as best he could, but he conveniently forgot about that in the face of his righteousness.)

"I will have you know," he told Lennox archly, "that I look fucking great in a dress. Drop-dead gorgeous, actually." This was not exactly true, considering dresses were made for people with far more feminine figures than he, but shh.

"I'm sure your boyfriend won't mind. Who knows, you might even get a nosebleed out of him."

Liron's expression soured. "Gross," he muttered. "Don't even talk about that jerk, I don't want to think about him." He brightened visibly, returning Lennox's clap on the back with a punch to the other's shoulder.

"But hey, maybe you should wear a dress and try and get a nosebleed out of your girlfriend. I'd pay you five bucks if you did it."

Few things gave Liron as much joy as Milrai and Lennox's relationship, if only because it made him feel that much better about his own mess of a relationship.

Saskia Sunder Kelsey

"Dear me, the thought of the both of you married? I can't even imagine."

Although years of being around Milrai had, obviously, done wonders for Saskia's twisted humour, he found his smirk returning in full force once his colleague had left, no doubt to pay their respects (read: kiss his grandfather's ass) and do whatever people did at weddings. It had been... difficult to keep his expressions suitable for such an occurrence, rather than losing himself in what he really felt at all this, but having someone who could ground him was comforting. Someone that knew how to take his mind off such things, if only momentarily, only made things better for him.

"I'm sure you'll work your way around that," Saskia dryly offered, though the near-imperceptible tilt of his lips gave him away. "After all, we'll be providing visuals in a few minutes." Vocalizing what hadn't particularly felt like reality only brought it down more heavily upon his shoulders and, not for the first or last time, he cast a quick glance at where he knew Liron was making his final preparations. One could've almost deemed it nervous, were it not for the fact that he didn't do nervous.

However, Milrai's unsettled reaction to his observations drew Saskia away from that train of thought, causing his amusement to spike still further when she tried to defend herself. Not knowing much about make-up, he'd been basing his accusation- if one could call it that- on light teasing, but the knowledge that she had been blushing helped keep his gaze a little less frigid than usual.
First a boy toy and now a barbarian; perhaps someone will arrest me for bestiality in the near future. At least I'll have Milrai to keep me company...

Rather than voice his thoughts aloud, though, Saskia settled with a faintly amused, "I'll be sure to pass on your sentiments; Liron would be thrilled at his new nicknames."

The visual Saskia received when Milrai suggested that he wear a dress- because, clearly, he was the epitome of beauty and grace- only brought on another undignified snort. At this point in time, he probably wouldn't have cared if one of Marmaduke's acquaintances thought he was smoking invisible cocaine.

"My grandfather would jump out of his skin if you offered," Saskia replied instead, unable to suppress the flatness in his tone at the recollection of how Marmaduke had taken his decision to date (and, eventually, marry) Liron, "but, alas, he has no say in this. I can't say the same for your leafy friend, though; he might suffocate me with his foliage if I made off with you.

Not to mention Liron's reaction to it all, Saskia thought with a faint grimace.

But the sight of his daughter brought a smile (that scared a few of his tittering colleagues away) to Saskia's face, small and genuine (and terrifying, apparently) as it was. Although he wiped it smooth when he greeted more people, it returned with a vengeance when he turned back and found Cleo holding onto Milrai's dress.
Three guesses as to what she wants, he thought dryly, before he uttered a quiet, "Don't scold him if he's not doing anything bad," and bent down to give her a quick hug.

With the smell of his daughter's hair lingering with him, Saskia pressed his nose against her forehead before he straightened up, turning to fend off his grandfather's sharp glare at his display of affection.

Trying to stifle any lingering thoughts about his best friend- his very male best friend, who wasn't exactly mincing or delicate- wearing a dress was traumatic enough, but adding the arch way Liron attempted to convince him otherwise... yeah, Lennox needed bleach, stat. Even if all forms of common sense pointed to this being a Very Bad Idea, especially considering how terribly the human body mixed with highly corrosive substances, having his eyes and brain eaten away was starting to sound like a very good idea. He'd probably need to smack his head against a brick wall for a few good minutes to get it out of his head, and even then it would likely call for a concussion or two to seal the deal.

Of course, this didn't stop Lennox from uttering a flat,
"Well, I'll give you the drop-dead part," but it did stop him from voicing anything else. As sadistic as he was, even Liron didn't deserve to suffer from the thought of fucking in a dress.

Thankfully for him, though, Liron's reaction to his boyfriend comment distracted Lennox pretty well. Sure, it boggled him a little that his best friend spat nails every time anyone so much as breathed his husband-to-be's existence (until he compared this to Milrai's reaction) but it didn't stop him from barking out a few coughing laughs.
"I'm sure 'that jerk' will be all you can think of tonight," he snorted, waggling his eyebrows rather exaggeratedly for good measure, but the punch to his shoulder cut that short.

Any lingering amusement disappeared fairly quickly once Liron spoke next.

"Fucking hell; I wouldn't do it if you gave me five hundred!" Lennox spat, instantly recoiling (both physically and mentally) at what Milrai would've thought if he wore a goddamn dress, of all things. "Look, just because you think your boyfriend's ass is great, it doesn't mean everyone'll look fetching in that strappy thing the harpy's wearing, 'kay? Keep your fucking dresses to your little kid and spare me your thoughts, goddammit."

...Yeah, Lennox really needed that bleach. The sooner his brain corroded away, the better.

Abraxas Sofianos-Kelsey
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

"Eh, he'll probably care, but it'll be fine," Abraxas snorted dismissively, waving a languid hand in the air (because adults always did that and it made them look cool, and he was a cool guy so it'd look cool on him too. His logic was flawless, he knew) in an effort to dispel Anthony's worries. Sometimes, he had to wonder at his younger brother's lack of confidence, so much at odds with his own, but a glance at his doe eyes and impossibly fluffy hair made him wave away that thought. He can stick to looking cute, he graciously decided, nodding in approval at his own kindness. We only need one cool guy in the family anyway.

Agreeing that his younger brother was cute and agreeing on a way to avoid near-certain punishment was another, though, which was why Abraxas paid less attention to Anthony's quiet praise than he normally would. Even though his nervousness was both palpable and unsurprising- palpable in the way his hand was getting progressively wetter and unsurprising in the lack of reaction he showed to his brother's rapid blinking- it didn't stop him from feeling guilty. Just a smidgen, of course, because it wasn't completely his fault that they were caught out in the open and that his younger brother was the one in charge, but...

Staring at the table, in the midst of other tables, ringed by people who could potentially see him crawling beneath it? Yeah, feeling guilt was the least of Abraxas' worries, especially not when he could feel a prickle of unease running down his spine.

"I'm surprised you could hide under there; it sure does look stuffy. And you don't look gross, silly; why else would your cheeks be pink from all those dumb adults?" Patting an aforementioned cheek to prove his point, Abraxas glanced down at his clothing and decided that, as much as he hated bow ties, he didn't really mind the rest of his clothes- so he was going to keep them nice and clean. "C'mon, let's go find another hidey-hole then. Can't have Cleo and great-grandpa finding us, right?"

With another insistent tug of Anthony's hand, Abraxas pointed to an empty-looking corridor and firmly uttered, "Let's go there, it looks pretty good."

Abraxas completely ignored the probability that Anthony wouldn't want to go with him, because it was just impossible. His younger brother wanted to hide, he wanted to hide- so what better way to hide than with each other? Honestly, someone should've given him a medal for being so smart.

Even he couldn't believe his own genius.

Cleo Sofianos-Kelsey
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

"Hello Aunt Milrai," Cleo dutifully replied, smiling up at her dad's beautiful best friend. It was hard not to be intimidated by her, especially when it was hard enough for her to not be intimidated by her dad as well, but she had seen the way her honorary aunt had softened when she saw her and it was enough to rally her dwindling courage and let out a soft, "You look lovely as well."

As nice as exchanging pleasantries and compliments were, though, Cleo had a mission to fulfill- one that required the utmost speed and sensitivity, given that she was fully aware of what Abraxas was capable of. It was probably a bad thing that she knew, considering that she had only known her older brother for a handful of years, but she had learnt that erring on the side of caution was best. It was what prompted her to nod sharply at Aunt Milrai's question, but not what prompted her to glance fondly at her dad's small smile.

And if Cleo lingered a little in his hug and when he pressed a near-kiss to her forehead? Well, she was the only one who had to know.

"I won't if he doesn't deserve it, dad," Cleo had murmured back, while her dad had been busy being his rarely affectionate self. Pursing her lips at the sudden rigidity to her father's figure, she laced her fingers through his and watched as he glanced down, squeezed her hand with a faint smile and untangled their fingers, before she turned to Aunt Milrai. She'd just have to trust that her dad's best friend could fend off whatever was bothering him for the time being.

Returning back to the matter at hand, though...
"Have you seen Abraxas anywhere, Aunt Milrai? I last saw him weaving through the chairs over there."

Cleo pointed at the satin seats they'd all sit in when the wedding occurred, before turning back to Aunt Milrai with a stern look.

LIRON SOFIANOS .
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

To be fair, it was easier to imagine yourself in a dress than to imagine your overwhelmingly masculine best friend in a dress, so Liron tried to understand Lennox's lack of enthusiasm by imagining Lennox in a wedding dress — but, unfortunately, his imagination didn't get to provide him with details because it decided that Lennox wouldn't last very long anyway, and Liron found the image of Lennox tripping on the hem of the skirt and faceplanting more amusing than disturbing.

One could never claim that Liron did not try.

"Well, I'll give you the drop-dead part."

Liron shot a mostly half-hearted glare at Lennox.  "Rude," he muttered under his breath.  "You could at least humor me."

"I'm sure 'that jerk' will be all you can think of tonight," Lennox said, and god, waggled his eyebrows in an overwhelmingly suggestive manner, as if to make doubly sure that Liron would understand the (not-so-)hidden meaning.

The shout that tore out of Liron's throat was, quite frankly, inhuman and probably loud enough to be heard in the next city over.  "Oh my god," he said incredulously.  "Oh my god."  He pointed an accusing finger at Lennox's chest.

"You are a fucking menace," he accused.  Thankfully, his mentioning of Milrai was more than substantial revenge; at least he would always have Lennox's problematic romance to hold over his head.

"Five thousand then," he offered again, as if this were some sort of bid or auction or whatever.  Being the bigger person, he chose to gracefully ignore the comment about his boyfriend's ass; Saskia did have a great ass, but no one needed to know that Liron thought that.

He smiled innocently, leaning close to Lennox as if just seeking some good ol' Best Friend vibes.  "But does the harpy look fetching in the strappy thing she's wearing?  That's what's important."  Liron poked Lennox's cheek in a somewhat-reprimanding manner, derailing the conversation a tad.  "Keep Cleo out of this conversation, thanks.  She is cute and pure and doesn't deserve to have her good name sullied by association with either of the fucking demons that we decided to date.  But back to the point — the  harpy."

Did Liron ever mention how much joy Lennox's relationship gave him?  Because it gave him a-fucking-lot.

MILRAI JIEL BRZOZA .
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

"I'll be sure to pass on your sentiments; Liron would be thrilled at his new nicknames."

From the limited interaction she'd had with the blonde man, she knew this was unlikely.  Sure, he was cheerful enough when he was talking with his acquaintances or friends (most likely as immature as he was, if the saying 'birds of a feather flock together' was to be trusted); but the moment he noticed Saskia, or the moment someone even brought up Saskia, he adopted the mannerisms of one more than willing to fight to the death with anyone who was convenient.

Preferably Saskia, if his loud threats were anything to go by.

Rather than saying anything, she just raised a derisive eyebrow, but some semblance of mirth glittered in her eyes when Saskia snorted in a most undignified manner, and not for the first time.  She did enjoy drawing these reactions out of her usually stoic best friend.

"Surely I'm a step up from your current groom," she said.  "Besides, I can easily win your grandfather over with my abundant charm, I'm sure."  A second eyebrow rose to join the first at the mention of her 'leafy friend'.  "I'm afraid I have no idea who you're talking about," she claimed airily.  "I make a habit to keep better company than shrubbery."

Cleo's arrival broke through Saskia's icy mask (the one he'd donned to greet his colleagues) as easily as if she had taken a hammer to it — metaphorically, of course, because Saskia's only daughter was an angel if Milrai had ever seen one.  Now, Abraxas was a different case; Milrai was sure he would literally take a hammer to something on a whim.

(She adored him just as much as she adored his sister.)

Milrai watched Saskia bend down to give his daughter a hug, mildly regretting that she didn't have a camera on her and cursing her dress for lacking pockets.  Photographic evidence of Saskia's soft side would surely sell for millions (or, at the very least, she could shove it in his face the next time he claimed he was a hardass — but in more sophisticated terms, of course).

"Have you seen Abraxas anywhere, Aunt Milrai? I last saw him weaving through the chairs over there."

Milrai pursed her lips thoughtfully.  "I last saw him with Anthony, I believe," she offered.  "They didn't seem to be getting into any trouble, but you never know."  She tried to summon up any more information, but she couldn't recall their location, and children moved around a lot.  "I'm afraid I don't remember anything more specific, my apologies Cleo."

The line of Saskia's shoulders suddenly stiffened, a noticeable difference from the softness of his posture when he'd greeted his daughter.  She made a mental note to ask him what was bothering him (perhaps his grandfather?) when Cleo had gone.

ANTHONY SOFIANOS-KELSEY .
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Anthony followed the motions that Saskia's hand made through the air with wide, captivated eyes. He wasn't exactly sure what the purpose of the gesture was, but it looked impressive enough and Abraxas always knew what he was doing, so he didn't ask.

He fidgeted awkwardly with his free hand when silence fell between him and his brother. He was never good at starting conversations (or keeping them going), but silence when it came to Abraxas always made him uneasy. He was always afraid he did something wrong or irritating, and that was the last thing he wanted.

He wanted his older brother to like him. Not necessarily think he was cool (because that was never going to happen, he was well aware that he was more what people called lame) or even capable, but you know. Be willing to tolerate him and not think he was annoying.

But then Abraxas assured him he didn't look gross and patted his cheek to further cement his point, and most of his worries abated. Not all, but most.

"R-right," Anthony stammered. He didn't know what to say beyond that (because, yes, under the tables was stuffy, but not as stuffy as the attention of the adults), and Abraxas rarely . . . complimented him. Was that even a compliment? He didn't know.

Anthony didn't get a chance to agree to Abraxas' plan before he was pulled along anyway, but it wasn't as if he was going to say no. For one, it was his older brother, and Anthony somewhat-idolized him; and for another, Anthony lacked one of the most necessary things in order to say no to someone: a spine.

He didn't resist as Abraxas tugged his hand; when he realized what was going on, he started walking behind him quite voluntarily. But he couldn't help voicing his concerns.

"It looks pretty empty," he mused, but remembered that was probably the whole point. He didn't lose steam, though. "What if there's a burglar? Or an assassin? Or a murderer? Or the Grim Reaper?"

His grip on Abraxas' hand tightened.

Saskia Sunder Kelsey
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Sometimes, Saskia wondered at his choice of friends. Acquaintances were people he couldn't choose- people who wanted to be with him for the expressed purpose of clambering over him, no doubt in an attempt to cozy up to those like his grandfather or steal his privileges and responsibilities from him- but friends, especially ones like Milrai, were a completely different issue. Don't get him wrong, he enjoyed the mental stimulus his best friend gave him, but there were moments when her gaze was not unlike those of Marmaduke's when he brought back a mediocre test score or below-average returns. It was probably a good thing that she didn't have dead fish eyes, too, or he'd have to question his sanity.

Still, it didn't stop Saskia from flatly uttering,
"You sound like a gold-digger when you say that," as he mentally shuddered at what he'd conjured up; he loved Milrai like the sister he never had, but imagining her charming Marmaduke was wrong in too many ways. It also didn't stop him from smirking, albeit ruefully, when she denied ever knowing Liron's rather temperamental best friend, but his daughter's solemn comment put a stop to that.

Sometimes, Saskia also wondered if an ancient spirit inhabited Cleo's young body.

But that was neither here nor there when his grandfather was boring holes into his head with every passing second, especially when his icy glare was far more potent than anything Saskia could ever hope of conjuring up in his lifetime. Absentmindedly feeling his daughter's hand tangle with his own, he gave it a squeeze and untangled it before he did anything he might regret- like, for instance, dig his nails into her soft palm- and went back to staring levelly at Marmaduke's disapproving gaze. Thankfully, the arrival of the last guest broke their unofficial staring contest, but he could still feel his grandfather's attention focused on him. Some things, it seemed, still didn't change with the passing years.

With a slight bow, he greeted the guest- one of Liron's colleagues, if memory served him right- with a little less emotion than the others, before he turned to Milrai and tonelessly said,
"We'll start whenever everyone's ready, then."

( but, honestly, the sooner the better; his godawful grandfather sorely needed a distraction )

Lennox Shea
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Admittedly, it was fun watching Liron splutter and huff about certain things in life, like his questionable suitability in a dress (which, okay, was more torturous than fun, but that was because Lennox didn't much care for crossdressing in general) and his aversion to the man he was marrying (which would ordinarily be concerning, except he understood exactly where his best friend was coming from). Perhaps it wasn't as fun to have his eardrums almost split open from the force of the groom's indignant exclamation, but the melodrama of it all more than paid off. Unfortunately, though, his somewhat misplaced amusement at Liron's expense only went so far when he himself was under attack- and at the risk of sounding like a certain overquoted meme, his fun time had very much morphed into an attacked one.

Which, granted, didn't detract from the humour of Liron's incredulity, but it certainly did enough to prevent him from savouring it.

"What the fuck, do you really think my pride's that cheap?" Lennox growled, eyes narrowing dangerously at Liron's woeful attempt at innocence. "Give me five million, including the cost of the dress and my goddamn balls." It probably wasn't fanciful for him to imagine that, after laughing herself stupid- or more stupid than she currently was, anyway- the witch would think he'd turned into a lady and deprive him of the necessary junk to make the conversion complete. For some woebegone reason, it seemed like the sort of thing she would do.

And then, of course, Liron had to make it worse by inquiring after what he thought of Milrai's clothes.

"The fucking harpy looks just as fetching in her strappy little thing as you think your sassy asshole does in his suit," Lennox retorted, mouth hitching up into a somewhat bitter smirk at his One Good Comeback For The DayTM. As transparent as he was, it was more than his life's worth to compliment Milrai and think that his best friend wouldn't let it slip- accidentally, if he believed Liron's feeble excuses- and slipping in a little thing about the guy's husband-to-be only sweetened the deal for him. If he felt bad about dragging his best friend's scarily mature (and maybe slightly adorable) daughter into it, then that was for him to know and for everyone else to never figure out.

...Point was, Lennox wasn't going to let his relationship make him feel buttsore, because that wasn't the point of this whole marriage deal.

And if he took just a little pleasure in adding a sly,
"But I'll give you the fucking demon bit for your lover-boy," then that, again, was really nobody's business.

Abraxas Sofianos-Kelsey
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Time was running short, and it was a fact that Abraxas instinctively knew; more guests than ever had filtered into the wedding venue and he had a sensation he'd quickly learnt to associate with Cleo, one that made the hairs on his nape prickle and rise. The fact that his hand was almost slippery with his younger brother's sweat didn't exactly help, and neither did the furtive, uncertain movements they were both exhibiting. It was hard to tell who was drawing more attention- Anthony with his nervous energy and slightly hysterical babbling, or his own striking good looks and palpable confidence- but the sooner they reached that corridor, the better.

Which didn't stop him from huffing a derisive,
"I know great-grandpa looks like a mafia boss, but dad wouldn't be dumb enough to invite killers here," at Anthony's unjustified worries, but whatever.

Before Abraxas could continue dismissing his younger brother's worries, though, two things happened: they reached the corridor, and something cut across his words. Had they been caught in the reception, held back by adults he neither knew nor cared for, perhaps he may have never heard his other dad shouting- but he did, and it was familiar, and it gave him an idea.

(not a great one, mind you, but one that could stall Abraxas' punishment for a while)

"Hey, did you hear that?" Abraxas asked Anthony, even though it had been a very loud shout and his younger brother wasn't deaf. "That sounded like dad; we should see if he's okay."

Even if Abraxas was fairly certain that his dad was fine- he'd seen both of them fighting and they had the most awesome techniques when they really got going- he was hoping that Anthony, who was a bleeding heart with limbs, might not remember. It'd give him an excuse to go into his room under the pretense of seeing if his dad was alright (which would've sounded both problematic and downright terrible, had he any morals he cared about, but what were morals in the face of saving one's hide?) and then, most importantly of all, he could hide there while fussing over his dad.

His plans just kept getting better and better, really.

Cleo Sofianos-Kelsey
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

As much as Cleo wanted to stay by her dad's side and get a smile on his face for his wedding, the mere thought of Abraxas running amok with nobody to hold him back- because pretty much every adult she could see was busy with Important Talks and Anthony, as lovely as he was, would rather keel over than say 'no' to his older brother- was downright terrifying. Granted, the worst he had done was lace the punch bowl with laxatives, after he'd been told he couldn't drink it... but this was her dads' special day and nothing should go wrong on it. Aunt Milrai's response to her question didn't exactly make her worries ease, though.

"They're not in trouble yet, you mean," Cleo grumbled, uncharacteristically childish in the face of her burgeoning worry. She adored her brothers with as much of her fierce love as she adored her dads, but Abraxas was trouble incarnate and Anthony couldn't hurt a fly if he tried. Still, knowing that her brothers were together meant that she could be on the lookout for two, rather than one, familiar person, and that knowledge was enough to ease her heart a little. Her younger adoptive brother may not be able to stop his older brother's shenanigans, but he could probably temper them somewhat. If Abraxas was in the mood to be charitable, that was.

Information was information, as scarce as it was, and at least Cleo had something new to work with now. With a small smile on her face and a quick hug, she whispered a soft,
"Thanks, Aunt Milrai," before detaching herself from her dad's best friend and solemnly marching back into the fray- or the milling guests, as it were. However, knowing that her brothers were together and finding her brothers when they were together were two entirely different matters, which meant that she'd circled around just about every adult in the room and found nothing.

It was only luck that drew Cleo's eyes down, spotting a discarded a crumpled strip of cloth she might've otherwise missed.

Now, Cleo didn't know much about stray bits of cloth, but the fact that it was close to the chairs and that it had part of a small shoe-print on it was rather telling. Nudging at it with her own foot (and eventually picking it up- because she had manners and didn't leave things on the floor, thank you very much), she couldn't really figure out what it was, exactly, but she knew that it probably belonged to one of her two brothers.
Abraxas tore something, didn't he? she mused to herself, frowning down at the limp thing in her hand. I knew he would do something silly like that...

And with it clutched tightly in her hand, Cleo's eyes began scanning the surroundings. On a whim, she decided to move towards the nearest empty space- a corridor tucked between two groups of socializing adults.
